        In the world of picture books, where authors sometimes have only a few dozen words to work with, bringing a story around to a surprising and satisfying end . "A picture book uses both text and illustration to create meaning; one is not as powerful alone as it is with the other" (Giorgis , 51). Picture books for young adults are often boring to younger readers because of the longer, more complex texts. However, older readers would find these texts and pictures entertaining and engaging.

        This session will focus on how the pairing of primary sources and picture books can enhance the awareness of a historic event or individual, the research process taken by authors of historically based picture books, as well as the author’s or illustrator’s portrayal of history.   This picture book biography highlights Wells’s essential contributions to advancing the movement to win women the vote.
